Will Dick Cheney allow oversight? (All Indexes)

For four years, Vice President Dick Cheney has resisted routine oversight of his office's handling of classified information. And when the office in charge of overseeing classification in the executive branch objected, Cheney's office suggested that the oversight office be shut down, documents released Thursday show.

It turns out that Cheney, who has wielded extraordinary executive power but also serves as president of the Senate, maintains that his office is not an "entity within the executive branch" -- and not subject to annual reporting or on-site inspections under an executive order updated in 2003.
